China files trade complaint with WTO against US over steel tariffs

China is filing a complaint with the World Trade Organization (WTO) against the United States (US) tariffs on steel, aluminum products.

The Geneva-based trade body said Tuesday that China has requested 60 days of consultations with the US to resolve the dispute.

China's representative to the world trade body has requested “consultations” with Washington over its decision to impose “additional ad valorem rate of duty on imports of certain steel and alumium products,” according to the document, which stated that the complaint was filed on April 5.

If the two sides can't agree on a solution, the next step could be for Beijing to request a ruling from a panel of trade experts.

China claims that the duties of 25 per cent on imports of steel and 10 per cent on imports of aluminium products breach international trade rules.
