The party is an offshoot of the now defunct National Awami Party (NAP) which was led by Abdul Samad Khan Achakzai, the father of its current leader, Mehmood Khan Achakzai.

Key issues

• The party advocates Pakhtun nationalism for the Pakhtuns living in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Fata and Balochistan.
• Demands Baloch-Pashtun parity in terms of distribution of resources, services and official slots in Balochistan.
• PkMAP calls for maximum provincial autonomy, is a strong proponent of the 18th Amendment and insists the amendment should be applied in letter and spirit.

• The party is against military's interference in politics.
• In terms of foreign relations, PkMAP insists that the country must adopt an impartial stance in its relationships with other countries and is against interference in the internal matters of neighbouring countries.

Elections 2018

PkMAP has fielded candidates from 19 NA seats — out of these, eight seats are from Balochistan, three from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, two from Sindh, one from Punjab, three from Fata and two from Islamabad.

Elections 2013

The party won three general seats in the National Assembly and 10 in the Balochistan Assembly. Mohammad Khan Achakzai, who is the older brother of PkMAP chief Mehmood Khan Achakzai, is currently serving as the governor of Balochistan.

PkMAP was also a coalition partner in Balochistan until Sanaullah Zehri stepped down in the wake of a political crisis in Balochistan when 14 MPAs passed a no-confidence motion against his government.

Past elections

In 2008, the party boycotted the general elections to deny former president General (retd) Pervez Musharraf legitimacy. In 2002, PkMAP secured one NA seat and three provincial assembly seats. The party won two provincial seats in the 1997 polls. It won three NA seats and four provincial seats in 1993. Prior to this, in the 1990 elections, PkMAP won three provincial assembly seats, whereas, Mehmood Achakzai was elected MNA from Pishin.

Major political plays

• The party stood by the PML-N during some of the latter's most challenging times in government, including the sit-ins staged by PTI and Pakistan Awami Tehreek in 2014.

• It stood by the PML-N, of which it was a coalition partner in Balochistan government when the Balochistan Assembly passed a no-confidence motion against the ruling party earlier this year. The party deseated its MPA Kakar Manzoor for floor crossing after he voted for Mir Abdul Quddus Bizenjo as Balochistan's chief minister.

• PkMAP has on occasion extended its support to the Pakhtun Tahaffuz Movement. One its senators Usman Khan Kakar was also photographed with PTM leader Manzoor Pashteen in Lahore.

Criticism and controversy

• PkMAP has opposed the merger of Fata with KP and has been widely criticised for the position. Its chief Mehmood Khan Achakzai has previously suggested that Fata should be governed either by a governor or a council that should be elected through adult franchise.

• Saying the Pakhtun community does not enjoy the same rights that are available to the people of Punjab and Sindh, PkMAP chief Achakzai has called for the creation of a province for Pakhtuns living in areas from the Durand Line to Mianwali.
