PPP calls for removal of Marvi as BISP chairperson

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has written to the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC), seeking removal of former MNA Marvi Memon as the chairperson of Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP).

A letter, sent by PPP information secretary Dr Nafisa Shah, says that Ms Memon did not resign like other cabinet ministers did at the end of the five-year term of the PML-N government and she continues to work as the BISP chief.

“The BISP is a highly influential programme which disburses payment to 5.2 million families and can be easily used to manipulate the forthcoming elections. A PML-N supporter and formerly an MNA continues to hold the office of the chairperson and this is tantamount to election engineering and pre-poll rigging,” the letter reads.

It is further stated that Ms Memon be asked to resign and a senior most bureaucrat or board officiates until the new government is formed.
