Website review: Fun and education

Internet is full of interesting as well as educational stuff and from the millions of sites and tools available for free, it becomes quite a hassle to search for the right site that is of your particular interest. The best action in that case would be to take guidance from your elders, or ask them to search something for you.

For such a purpose, I came across www.ducksters.com — a site full of fun and educational content for young as well as a bit older kids. The site is educational as it covers almost the same subjects as you have at school, but with more interesting factors added to them.

Well-dressed ducks welcome you as you open the site. There is no distraction, just to the point topics in separate categorised boxes for you to choose from. The categorised boxes include History, Science, Biography, Geography, Games and Fun. Each category has sub-categories and clicking any of them opens the topic separately. There is brief explanation in very simple and easy language.

What I like most on the site is whatever the topic you are reading, it ends with related-interesting ‘Facts’ and ‘Activities’ which include wordsearch, crossword and a quiz. To top all the other features on the site, ‘Listen to Recorded Reading’ of the whole page, is what I have yet to find on any other kid-friendly website.

This unique feature can be of a lot of help for younger children having difficulty in reading the content or those with eye-related problems. However, the feature is not available on all topics, but can be found on many.

Overall, the experience you will have on the site will be great, but the expression of the ducks representing each category is weird. They are too serious, without smiles and no softness to their expression. A word of advice for the creators of the site would be to give these ducks some cuteness and expression so that kids can better enjoy the visit to the website.

Have fun and education together at www.ducksters.com
