Khan gets the go-ahead to contest polls from Mianwali
It's official! PTI Chairman Imran Khan has been declared eligible to contest the upcoming general elections from his native Mianwali, all thanks to an appellate tribunal that dismissed the returning officer's (RO) objections on Khan's paperwork.
The Election Commission of Pakistan's lawyer argued that Khan's affidavit was not certified right and that he had not declared all his assets. The PTI chief, on the other hand, told the court that the RO's objections were contrary to the facts. In the end, the tribunal sided with Khan, giving him the green light for the electoral battle ahead.
The decision must be a relief for the PTI chief considering he chose to formally launch his election campaign from Mianwali. To have his candidacy shot down from a constituency he kicked off his campaign from would have been embarrassing, to say the least.
