A record number of Pakistani women are vying for seats this election

As many as 171 women are running for 272 general seats in the National Assembly, the highest number of women candidates in Pakistan's electoral history.

According to the Election Commission of Pakistan's complete list of candidates released this week, 105 women have been awarded party tickets, while another 66 will be contesting as independent candidates.

The 2013 elections saw 135 women, more independents than party ticket holders. This was up from a mere 72 in the 2008 polls.

Here's how many women are running from each province:

  • Punjab: 103
  • Sindh: 46
  • Khyber Pakhtunkhwa: 15
  • Balochistan: 7

The Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf has not awarded a single party ticket to a woman candidate in KP, while the Pakistan Peoples Party is fielding the highest number of women ticket holders.
