Army retain boxing title
LAHORE, June 7: Army with four gold, two silver and four bronze medals retained the title, winning the 30th national boxing championship at the Atiq Stadium under floodlights on Sunday night. Army, whose six boxers entered the finals, showed good performance as they came out winners in four bouts.
They were facing a stiff challenge from Navy and Wapda, whose five and four boxers, respectively were competing in the finals.
Army collected 20 points to take a clear lead on Navy and Wapda, who remained tied at 12 points each.
However, Navy were declared runners-up for having more silver medals.
Navy claimed two gold and three silver medals while Wapda had two gold, silver and bronze medals, each to remain third.
Karachi Port Trust (KPT) with 11 points (two silver, five bronze medals) came fourth.
The Pakistan Air Force (PAF) fell one point behind to KPT (two silver, five bronze medals) to secure the fifth spot.
KESC (one gold, one silver) had five points while Railways (four bronze medals) obtained four points to earn the 6th and the 7th spots, respectively.
Nauman Karim, who was declared the best boxer, earned second gold medal of Army in 51kg.
Nauman defeated Syed Jawad Ali (Navy) in one of the best finals on points 34-20.
Though Nauman, using his international experience, remained ahead in all four rounds but the way Jawad gave him resistance was a treat to watch.
In 54 kg, Abid Jan succeeded in clinching the lone gold medal for Karachi Electric Supply Corporation (KESC).
He eliminated the challenge of another Seaman Muhammad Pervaiz.
Abid was the winner after the referee stopped the contest in the third round.

91kg: Shaukat Ali (Army) beat Saifullah Niazi (Wapda) RSC second round (22-2).
91-plus kg: Muzaffar Iqbal (Wapda) beat Abdul Razzak (Army) RSC second round (8-4).

51kg: Shahid Khan (KPT), Imran Hafeez (Wapda).
