By-election in city today

KARACHI: By-election on a National Assembly seat and a Sindh Assembly seat is scheduled to be held on Sunday (today).

NA-243 had been won by Prime Minister Imran Khan during July 25 general elections, who vacated it after opting for a Mianwali seat, his native constituency.

PM Khan had secured 91,358 votes comfortably defeating Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan’s Ali Raza Abidi, who bagged 24,082 votes.

PTI has fielded Alamgir Khan in the by-election against MQM-P’s Amir Wali Chishti, Pakistan Peoples Party’s Hakim Ali, Asif Hasnain of the Pak Sarzameen Party and Nawazul Huda of Tehreek-i-Labbaik Pakistan.

A total of 402,731 voters have been registered, of whom 211,510 are male and 191,221 are female.

NA-243 encompasses Gulshan-i-Iqbal, Gulistan-i-Jauhar, Bahadurabad, Sharfabad, Stadium Road, Expo Centre, Hasan Square, Shanti Nagar, Mujahid Colony, Aladdin Park, and Metroville, etc.

The election on PS-87 was deferred after a TLP candidate died before polling day.

Some 26 candidates are contesting for this seat, including Sajid Jokhio of PPP, PTI’s Qadir Bux, Sindh United Party’s Ghulam Mohammad, PML-N’s Khalil Brohi, TLP’s Qurban Ali and others.

This constituency covers vast rural swathes of Malir district in which number of voters is 146,852, of whom 83,992 are male and 62,860 female.
