Zardari to visit Thar
KARACHI: Pakistan Peoples Party co-chairman and former president of Pakistan Asif Ali Zardari has said that ventures like Thar coal power project will put Thar on the road to progress and prosperity.
“At present Thar is facing a drought and famine which is the main cause of miseries of people, but there is no issue which could not be resolved,” he said and directed elected members of the National Assembly and the Sindh Assembly to go to the people in their respective constituencies and make every effort to mitigate their hardships.
Mr Zardari stated this here on Friday during a briefing given to him by Adviser to the Sindh Chief Minister on Human Rights Dr Khatumal Jeewan on the calamity-affected region of Thar.
Mr Zardari, taking notice of the situation, has decided to visit Thar himself.
He also sought performance reports from elected representatives of the area within a week along with their recommendations as to how to save Thar from drought and famine and provide relief to Tharis.
Expressing his optimism, Mr Zardari said with the implementation of development projects like installation of Thar coal power plant, the fate of Thar would change soon.
Earlier Khatumal Jeewan told the party chief that until drinking water from a canal was supplied to Thar, like in the case of Achhro Thar where drought situation had been met by supplying water from Nara Canal, it would be difficult to meet the drought challenge.
Responding to this suggestion, PPP-P chief said that the problems of Thar would be resolved on priority basis.
“If water supply through canal is feasible, we would certainly go for it,” he said.
