Action planned over refusal of measles vaccination

MANSEHRA: The district administration has asked the health department to identify the people declining vaccination of their children against measles saying the government will take legal action against them.

“I don’t want any measles vaccination refusal case reported in Mansehra and therefore, those refusing measles vaccination of their children will be dealt with under the law,” deputy commissioner Yasir Khan told a meeting of the health department here on Friday.

The meeting was attended among others by district health officer Dr Shahzad Ali Khan, assistant district health officer Nasir Shah and district coordinator Dr Yasir. The deputy commissioner said the people refusing measles vaccination of their children challenged the writ of the government and therefore, they’re liable to punishment under the law.

He said vaccination refusal cases were reported in Balakot tehsil, where the administration tackled them well.

Mr Yasir praised the health department for reaching out to the children in remote areas and said officials of the relevant department also deserved appreciation for active participation in the anti-measles drive.

DHO Dr Shahzad Ali Khan said for the first time, the outreach teams ensured vaccination of children settled in snowbound Kaghan valley against measles.

“Though our overall vaccination coverage is 100 percent, it is little low in snowbound Kaghan valley as the locals have migrated to lower parts of the district,” he said.

Dr Shahzad said cash prizes would be given away to the team members with excellence performance during the anti-measles campaign. He said over 256,000 children were administered anti-measles vaccine in the district.
