From The Past Pages Of Dawn: 1968: Fifty Years Ago: Hockey victors
RAWALPINDI: President Ayub Khan today [Nov 19] conferred the President’s Medal of the “Pride of Performance” on the skipper of the National hockey team, left full-back Tariq Aziz, in recognition of their meritorious contribution in bringing Pakistan a gold medal in the Mexico Olympics.
The President made this announcement this morning, when he received the members of the National team at the President’s House. After announcing the honour, the President also personally congratulated Tariq Aziz and Khalid Mahmood. The President, who looked very happy on the performance of the team in the Mexico Games, told the players the Mexico victory had brought honour to the country — which was a matter of great happiness for all.
The President called upon the players to maintain their standard and produce still greater results in the next Olympics to be held in Munich in 1972.
Among those who were present on the occasion were the chef de mission, Mr. W.A. Shaikh, the Manager of the team, Lt Col S.M. Atif, Deputy Manager, Dr. Shahnjan, the national coaches. The President shook hands with every member of the team and personally congratulated them all. — Agency
