SHC issues notice to ECP on plea against Alvi

KARACHI: The Sindh High Court (SHC) has issued notices to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) and other respondents on a petition challenging the candidature of Dr Arif Alvi for the presidency.

Azmat Rehan had filed the petition in August before the presidential election.

After hearing arguments on Monday, a two-judge SHC bench, headed by Justice Mohammad Ali Mazhar, allowed the urgency application and fixed the petition for hearing on Jan 1.

The petitioner, who had lost a decades-long civil case regarding the ownership of a salt firm to Alvia Tabligh Trust, contended that Dr Alvi, a co-plaintiff in the suit, was not qualified to be elected president of Pakistan since he had allegedly filed fake and forged documents in the 1977 civil case.
