BOOKS IN BRIEF

M.A. Jinnah: The Outside View
Muhammad Reza Kazimi

The veteran historian, a retired professor of the University of Karachi, scrutinises Western (William Stafford Metz, Hector Bolitho, David Taylor and others) and Indian (Arun Shourie, Kailash Chandra, B.R. Ambedkar et al) writings on the founder of Pakistan to pinpoint historical and factual inaccuracies and misrepresentations. He also includes his own observations on three South Asian leaders — Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, Abul Kalam Azad and A.K. Fazlul Haq — considered to be the Quaid’s adversaries.

Pakistani Women Writers: 1947-2017
Munazza Yaqoob

Published by the Pakistan Academy of Letters, this collection of short biographies is a veritable who’s who of Pakistan’s female literati, comprising names both well-known and relatively obscure. It serves as a useful introduction and guide to women authors over the past 70 years who have created, in both Urdu and English, significant works in various genres of writing — non-fiction (literary criticism, essays, autobiographies and biographies and travelogues), short stories, novels and poetry — in Pakistan.
