PR set to launch train tracking system

RAWALPINDI: Pakistan Railways (PR) will introduce a train tracking system and relaunch Thal Express from Rawalpindi to Multan on Feb 12 (Tuesday) after a gap of 11 years.

Prime Minister Imran Khan is likely to inaugurate the train tracking system and the Thal Express at the Rawalpindi railway station.

A senior official of Pakistan Railways told Dawn that trackers had been installed in locomotives and through the new system the passengers would be able to get updated information about their train’s timings on their mobile phones.

He said the passengers would also get updates in case of an engine failure or replacement. He said through a mobile application, passengers can also find out the location of any train.

The official said Thal Express would depart from Rawalpindi at 7am and reach Multan at 7pm.

He said Thal Express was closed in 2008 due to a financial crisis and shortage of locomotives. It will have nine coaches and accommodate 1,000 passengers.

All coaches of Thal Express have been refurbished in the carriage factory.

Earlier, Mehar Express between Rawalpindi and Multan was also made operational. It departs from Rawalpindi at 6pm and reaches Multan at 5am.
