Police constable martyred in 'encounter' with drug peddlers in Karachi

A police official shot during an 'encounter' with drug peddlers in Karachi succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday evening, police said.

The deceased policeman, identified as Mohammad Farooq, was a constable posted at Pak Colony police station.

Farooq was critically injured in an exchange of fire with suspected drug peddlers during an operation in the city's Old Golimar area. The suspects managed to escape following the incident.

The wounded constable was taken to the Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH) where he died, according to Pak Colony police.

Sindh Inspector General (IG) Kaleem Imam expressed his regret and anger over the policeman's death and sought a report from the West Senior Superintendent of Police.

According to a police spokesperson, IG Imam inquired as to how the suspects managed to flee and whether the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) of security were followed during the 'encounter'.

He demanded that a forensic examination of the crime scene be conducted expediently and based on the evidence collected, the suspects involved be traced and duly punished for their crime.
