‘Medical entrance test soon after inter exam’

SAHIWAL: Entrance test for induction into medical colleges will be held soon after the FSc examination this year so that a large number of students can be saved from academies doing a roaring business, says University of Health Sciences (UHS) Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Javed Akram.

Speaking to the faculty members of the Sahiwal Medical College (SMC) on Wednesday, he deplored that the country’s medical colleges lacked modern research facilities and many developments in medical science could not be touched by these colleges.

“These developments are seen in the private sector but our public sector doctors lack the research facilities. It is with this background the UHS had developed an ‘Inter Universities Board’ to equip young doctors with modern techniques of research and developing technologies,” he said.

He said the UHS was also reviewing the undergraduate and postgraduate medical programmes and courses and redefining them. “This will enable our young doctors to be part of modern research and also benefits the patients,” he said. The new management system, he said, would also streamline administrative powers both with medical colleges and teaching hospitals.

He also announced that the UHS had approved 10 postgraduate level courses for the SMC and soon relevant staff would be provided.

SMC Principal Dr Muhammad Tariq, Dr Arshad Qureshi and Dr Raees Abbas also spoke.

TAX DAY: The Punjab Revenue Authority (PRA) and the District Excise and Taxation Department on Wednesday jointly held events to create awareness among people about the importance of taxation.

On the occasion of the tax day (April 10), a seminar having a theme of ‘Taxes Build Nations’ was organised in the University of Sahiwal (UoS).

UoS VC Dr Muhammad Nasir Afzal and PRA District Enforcement Officer Amir Farooq told the audience how nation’s economy could be strengthened with honest taxpayer culture.
