Army dominate national boxing with seven golds

ISLAMABAD: Army’s pugilists maintained their supremacy by retaining the overall title at the National Boxing Championships that concluded with the final bouts being contested here on Friday.

Army won seven golds and two bronze medals to finish ahead of Wapda (three gold, two silver and two bronze) and Pakistan Air Force (two gold and two silver).

Army’s Mohammad Saeed overwhelmed Navy’s Daud Khan 5-0 in the 46-49kg light flyweight final, team-mate Syed Mohammad Asif knocked out Wapda’s Attaullah in the 52kg and Army made it three golds in three lowest weight categories when Naqeebullah downed PAF’s Naimatullah in their 56kg contest. It became four out of four when Ibrahim Khan overcame Mohammad Ashraf of Railways in their 60kg final.

The first final not featuring an Army competitor was in the 64kg category where Wapda’s Ali Amjad beat Adnan Hussain of PAF. Army’s Gul Zaib beat Wapda’s Aamir Khan in the 69kg final and Saif-ul-Mannan outclassed Navy’s Tanveer Ahmed in the 75kg bout before Ahmed Ali brought Army’s seventh gold by beating Mirza Azam in the +91kg fight.
