HARIPUR: Eleven prisoners, who were overstaying their duration of imprisonment due to nonpayment of fines and amount of Diyat, were released from Haripur Central Jail here on Friday.

The jail authorities arranged a ceremony where the prisoners convicted under different criminal charges but were overstaying since 2014 were brought before the media.

On the occasion, jail superintendent Maqsood ur Rehman said these prisoners belonged to poor families and could not pay Diyat and fine imposed by different courts at the time of their conviction.

He said they could not be released without payment of fines and were a constant burden on the exchequer.

However, on the directives of PM Imran Khan the provincial government had deposited Rs1.1 million on account of their fine and Rs2.6 million on account of their Diyat making it possible for them to spend Eid with their families.

The beneficiaries spoke to the media and thanked PM Imran Khan, CM Mahmood Khan and IG prisons Masood ur Rehman for expediting the process of their release.

FOUR ARRESTED: The city police arrested two robbers and as many drug peddlers and seized homemade liquor from the latter’s possession.

SHO city Siddique Shah said the police arrested two robbers namely Umair of Malikyarand village and Siddiq of Kripliyan village.

They confessed to their involvement in a number of robberies.

Also, additional SHO Sera-i-Saleh Ghazanfar Ali, on an intelligence report, intercepted two bike riders identified as Nabil Nawaz and Shah Zeb of Mohallah Peeranwala Darwesh and recovered two 120 litres of homemade liquor from their possession.
