Gujrat makes stride in education evaluation

GUJRAT: The district has made a giant leap in education by achieving the third position in the province in the first quarter of 2019 on the Performance Evaluation Index (PEI).

Earlier, the Gujrat district had got 29th position in the last quarter of 2018.

The Punjab government issues the rankings of the 36 districts in education department by keeping in view the enrollment of students, provision of missing facilities, attendance of teachers and students, cleanliness and other such aspects. Gujrat had improved its ranking in October to December 2018 quarter from 35 to 29 and now the latest ranking issued last week shows the district has made a remarkable improvement by being declared No 3 after Kasur and Chakwal.

The Punjab Education Sector Reforms Programme (PESRP) and the Programme Monitoring and Implementation Unit (PMIU) categorise the districts through a strict monitoring system on the basis of rankings every three months.

Gujrat had earlier been declared No 1 in terms of enrollment of students in nursery class among 26 districts of Punjab. The figures were released in April last and officials in the District Education Authority (DEA) said the factor of attaining the top position in the enrollment campaign had also contributed to an improvement in the ranking.

Deputy Commissioner Dr Khurram Shahzad lauded DEA Chief Executive Officer Afzal Shahid, District Monitoring Officer Faisal Sultan and the entire team of the department on the achievement.

dental units: The district health authority has approved the provision of three dental units and medical equipment for two rural health centres (RHCs) and the Lalamusa trauma centre.

Since the dental unit of Lalamusa trauma centre has been rendered dysfunctional for the last almost 10 months due to the break down of the machinery, the administration of the centre demanded a new dental unit.

Dr Zahid Tanveer, cheif executive officer of the district health authority, said the authority would instal dental units at the Shadiwal and Malka RHCs.

He added the Shadiwal RHC would also be provided with a new power generator as well as the new ECG, ultra sound and X-Ray machines.

He also expressed the hope that with the provision of such medical equipment and machinery to these health centres, burden on the district’s major hospitals would also be reduced.

CLINICS SEALED: A team of the district administration on Wednesday sealed two clinics of quacks during a raid in rural areas in the outskirts of the city.

Assistant Commissioner Muhammad Jameel conducted the raids as part of the crackdown on quackery. The team sealed the clinic of Jabir Hussain at Ghazi Chak and Qamar Ijaz at Kathala Chenab after they were found prescribing medicines without proper qualification.

The officials confiscated the medicines from these clinics and sent the cases of these quacks to the authorities concerned.
