Release of water from Mangla hits villages along Jhelum

GUJRAT: Flood water entered some rural areas located along the bank of Jhelum river affecting the local population, livestock and farm land after the authorities released around 110,000 cusecs of water from the Mangla dam late on Monday night.

However, the Jhelum administration says the situation is under control as the required relief work has been done.

The release of water from the dam caused a low-level flood downstream and affected Chutala, Khurd and other areas along the river bank.

The villagers and Rescue 1122 teams moved the people stranded in the flooding to safe areas.

Jhelum Deputy Commissioner Saif Anwar Jappa told reporters that after receiving the information of water being released from the dam, the administration had issued a flood warning in the area located along the river.

As per the Mangla dam authorities, water had been released on the request of irrigation department so that the farm lands could be provided with the water in those areas where water was not available due to long dry spell.
