HYDERABAD: PPP hits by row over candidates: Local body elections

HYDERABAD, July 27: The People’s Party Parliamentarians is reportedly in a disarray over selection of candidates for the local body elections in the Matiari district and the Qasimabad taluka of the Hyderabad district.

There are report of serous conflicts between Makhdoom Fazal Hussain of the Hala House and Makhdoom Amin Fahim of the Makhdoom House over nomination of party candidates.

Makhdoom Fazal is reported to have bypassed the Makhdoom House and announced names of his own candidates against those of the latter.

Reports from Hala and Matiari said Makhdoom Fazal was a member of the board which was entrusted with selection of party candidates but he had not been consulted.

In addition to the internecine fighting, the PPP has another obstacle in the shape of the Jamote Ittehad of Matiari. According to insiders, the Jamote Ittehad and the ruling Pakistan Muslim League have joined hands against the PPP.

In the Qasimabad taluka, differences have reportedly developed among local leaders of the party.

To resolve the differences, the high echelon of the party –Syed Qaim Ali Shah, Nisar Ahmad Khuhro, Safdar Abbasi and Nawab Mohammad Yousuf Talpur – had to rush to Hyderabad and discuss the matter with the local party leaders but to no avail.

A high-level meeting of the party was held at the residence of MPA Syed Ali Nawaz Shah Rizvi which ended at 5am on Wednesday without any result.

The provincial leaders considered appeals from disgruntled members of Tharparkar, Mirpurkhas, Tando Allahyar, Hyderabad and Sanghar districts who had been neglected by the local board of the party in selection of candidates for the polls.

MNA Syed Qurban Ali Shah, MPA Ali Mardan Shah, MNA Amir Ali Shah Jamote, MNA Shagufta Jumani, MPA Pir Amjad Shah Jilani, Abdul Sattar Bachani and MPA Zahid Bhurgari from the aforementioned districts attended the meeting.

Insiders said the decision of the party’s provincial coordination committee on the appeals would be communicated to the local leadership very soon.

They said election board head MPA Zahid Bhurgari had informed the board about violation of the party discipline by Sindh People’s Youth Organization president Amjad Baloch and city chapter office-bearer Khurram Leghari, whose application for party tickets had been rejected.

Mr Bhurgari said when the board’s 33 members had taken a unanimous decision about ticket allotments there was no reason for candidates to raise voice against the party.
