People evacuated from flooded areas

VEHARI: Over 900 people have been evacuated to safer places from flood affected areas since Tuesday.

According to the Flood Control Centre, 23,747 cuesc flow was recorded at the Islam Headworks, 56,660 cuescs at Sulemanki and 37,640 cuescs in Ganda Singhwala in the River Sutlej on Wednesday.

The Irrigation Department removed illegal structures near Islam Headworks while Rescue 1122 shifted over 900 people to safer places from different parts of Burewala sub-division.

The administration also set up 12 relief camps across the district. Floodwater entered mauzas Jamlera, Bhindi Jatera, Noon and Basti Noshera, Sahoka, Kali Shah and Mehro Baloch. Flooding also destroyed hundreds of acres of cotton, maize and paddy.

At least, 20 villages were flooded in Burewala. The government closed primary schools in Mauza Saldera due to flooding. Deputy Commissioner Irfan Ali Kathia said the situation was under control and the floodwater would recede in the next few days.

He said they were ready to cope with any eventuality as health, irrigation, revenue and rescue officials were on the alert. Mr Kathia and District Police Officer Saqib Sultan inspected rescue operations.
