Kanrani to sue SCBA secretary for ‘defamation’

QUETTA: Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) president Amanullah Kanrani has said there is no constitutional rule that allows a few lawyers to remove him from his position and appoint senior vice president in his place to head the lawyers’ association.

Speaking at a press conference here on Wednesday, Mr Kanrani said he would file a defamation lawsuit against the SCBA secretary and other lawyers for their alleged involvement in his character assassination.

He said the selection board did not issue any notification regarding his dismissal. The Balochistan High Court had asked the SCBA secretary for personal appearance before the court on Oct 8, he added.

Mr Kanrani claimed that a group of lawyers in Lahore had moved a so-called no-confidence motion against him, because they had not attended an SCBA meeting. But he reminded them that the SCBA had an elected body that handled internal matters.

He said he had been elected after bagging 1,300 additional votes. “If anyone has objection, he can submit his complaints in Pakistan Bar Council,” he said, adding that the PBC was led by the attorney general.

He said that schedule for next SCBA election had already been announced.

Expressing grief over the act of “non-seriousness” of the lawyers group that he alleged had been involved in his character assassination, Mr Kanrani said he would file a lawsuit against them.
