Murder of man sparks protest in Swabi

SWABI: Residents of Saleem Khan village on Friday placed the body of an aged man, who was killed by unidentified robbers, at Karnal Sher Khan Chowk in the district headquarters and demanded arrest of the attackers.

Members of victim family said that in a pre-dawn incident a group of robbers entered their house by scaling the boundary wall to loot them at gunpoint.

However, they woke up and Muqarab Khan, the aged head of the family, grabbed one of the robbers, telling the women to help him. The robbers opened fire at him and as a result he died on the spot.

The incident occurred in the jurisdiction of Swabi city police in Major Banda, an area of Saleem Khan union council.

The residents brought the body in a vehicle to Karnal Sher Khan Chowk, Swabi, and people of the area also reached the district headquarters, covering a distance of six kilometres.

They placed the body in the chowk and declared that they would remain there till arrest of the killers. Soon they were joined by PTI district general secretary Major Fida and KP Youth Wing president Shazada Fahad.

The protesters said that robbery incidents were a routine in the area, but no action was taken against the culprits.

Addressing the protesters, Mr Fida said it was the responsibility of district police to provide security to the people. Later, the police officials held talks with leaders of the protesting people. The people ended their protest when the police assured them that the robbers would be arrested within 12 hours.

Meanwhile, the police have registered an FIR against unknown robbers.

KILLED: Two women of a wedding party were killed when an auto-rickshaw rammed into a roadside tree in Yar Hussain area on Friday, said police.

The wedding party was on way to Mardan from Yar Hussain area when the accident occurred at Kadamay Road. Three other women were also injured in the incident.
