Two sanitation workers die while cleaning sewer

KARACHI: Two young sanitation workers died apparently after inhaling toxic gases while cleaning a sewage line in Shah Latif Town on Friday afternoon, said Edhi Foundation and hospital officials.

They added that the men were cleaning a gutter line in Sector 19-B of Shah Latif Town off National Highway when they fell unconscious.

They were taken to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre where doctors pronounced them dead on arrival, said JPMC head Dr Seemin Jamali.

The bodies were taken to mortuary to fulfil medico-legal formalities.

The deceased were identified as Sohail Irshad and Anub.

It is mostly seen in the city that sanitation workers clean sewage lines without having any safety equipment.

Passerby shot dead in drug peddlers’ clash

A violent clash between drug gangs claimed the life of a teenage passerby in New Karachi Industrial Area late on Thursday night, said local police.

They added that Fahad, 16, was shot dead in Khamiso Goth.

A New Karachi Industrial Area police officer said that the armed clash took place between rival drug peddlers in the area.

The boy was passing through the area when a bullet hit him in the head. He was critically wounded and taken to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital where doctors pronounced him dead on arrival.
