Lawyers protest COAS extension, Musharraf’s defence

KARACHI: Proceedings in courts remained suspended in several Sindh cities on Thursday as lawyers observed a boycott on a call for countrywide protest given by Pakistan Bar Council to condemn government’s decision to grant extension to chief of the army staff and defending former military dictator Gen Pervez Musharraf in a case of high treason.

In Karachi, proceedings in subordinate judiciary were disturbed and hundreds of cases fixed for hearing at City Courts and district courts in Malir could not be taken up due to non-production of undertrial prisoners as various groups of lawyers visited the courts to stop legal work.

The Karachi Bar Association wrote letters to the district and sessions judges requesting them to stay away from judicial work for the day.

The work remained partly suspended at the Sindh High Court as representatives of Sindh High Court Bar Association stopped lawyers, litigants and provincial and federal law officers at main entrances to the SHC building asking them to keep away from the courts.

MIRPURKHAS: Members of district bar association (DBA) boycotted court proceedings in the district in protest against government decision to grant extension to COAS and defend retired Gen Musharraf.

The protesting lawyers, who wore black armbands, condemned the federal government for the “unprecedented” acts.

NAWABSHAH: Shaheed Benazirabad district bar association boycotted all courts in response to the federal lawyers’ body’s call for protest against the federal government’s decisions.

APP adds: Hyderabad’s legal fraternity boycotted court proceedings on the call of Pakistan Bar Council on Thursday.
