Gujrat police crack down on students involved in violence

GUJRAT: Police claimed on Friday to have arrested around a dozen students belonging to different groups for their involvement in clashes, exchange of firing and torture, and sharing the videos of these incidents on the social media.

Asad Gujjar, the spokesman for the Gujrat police, said two groups of students had clashed near Hariyewal village along GT Road bypass on Dec 21 and they shared the video on the social media.

In another incident, he said, two other groups -- one belonging to Gujrat and the other from Gujranwala -- clashed at Ghumman village near Hafiz Hayat campus of the University of Gujrat (UoG) on Dec 24 last.

These groups resorted to firing and torture besides blocking the road leading to the varsity campus and then shared a video of the incident on the social media which caused panic among the area people.

However, he said, police registered cases of both these incidents after which around a dozen students from Gujrat and Gujranwala were arrested and the remaining suspects were being traced.

He said police had been given instructions to show zero tolerance on such issues.
