31 schools to get water filtration plants in Gujrat

GUJRAT: Deputy Commissioner (DC) Khurram Shahzad says he will install water filtration plants in 31 public schools with the help of philanthropists.

He told Dawn on Thursday the schools with 1,000 or more students had been selected for clean drinking water supply. These plants will be linked with deep bore water turbines.

One such water filtration plant has been installed by a philanthropist in a government school in Bunian village.

The DC said some philanthropists would fund the clean drinking water projects.

The administration has completed several public welfare projects under public private initiatives such as the Rs130 million trauma centre and a Rs40 million burn center at Aziz Bhatti Shaheed Teaching Hospital, a Rs150 million kidney centre in the city and academic blocks in public schools.

One such social worker Imtiaz Kausar has installed 16 water filtration plants at public places.

He will contribute to water projects. The DC inaugurated a water filtration plant, funded by Kausar, in Kunjah. Another such a plant awaits opening at Swedish Institute of Technology in Gujrat. Mr Kausar said that initially he worked in the health sector but the lack of clean drinking water would cause waterborne diseases, so he decided to invest in the provision of such a facility.

Some philanthropists also announced cash donations.
