Pakistan Academy fail in gallant attempt

LAHORE, Aug 21: Pakistan Academy won the two-match series against the touring South African Academy after the second four-day fixture ended in a dramatic draw at the Qadhafi Stadium on Sunday.

Thanks to sparkling centuries by skipper Hasan Raza and Shahid Yousuf, Pakistan Academy came tantalising close to winning the second match after being asked to chase a target of 330 in 68 overs once South African Academy declared their second innings at 162 for five 20 minutes before lunch on the final day.

In the end, the home team finished six runs short when the match ended while reaching 324 for six with Hasan finishing on 122 not out.

Pakistan Academy, who won the opening four-dayer in Karachi by nine wickets, won the series 1-0.

The highlights of the Pakistan Academy’s second innings were the batting of Hasan, Shahid and Khalid Latif.

After Nasir Jamshed had perished without scoring, Khalid and Shahid added 104 for second wicket before Khalid was caught behind for 50. His 95-ball innings contained three fours and two sixes.

Hasan lifted the tempo in the company of Shahid as the pair put on 156 in 112 minutes. Shahid departed while going for another big hit when he holed out to Frans Nkuna at long-off for a splendid 111 off 177 balls. The youngster struck 15 fours.

The departure of next man, Aamir Sajjad for a duck, enabled the tourists to slow down the run-rate with Pakistan now needing 37 off 30 balls.

Mansoor Amjad joined Hasan, who looked worn out in humid conditions, but the visitors had all their fielders patrolling the boundary while allowing only singles.

Mansoor then fell, caught in the deep, for 13.

When the final over arrived, Pakistan Academy still required 12 runs, but only managed half of them. Hasan hit 19 fours and four sixes in a 112-ball knock.

Morne Morkel bowled well in trying conditions to end up with four for 78.
