Pims forms committee to probe death of patient

ISLAMABAD: The management of Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (Pims) on Monday constituted a committee to investigate the death of a patient.

The two-member committee headed by Dr Imran Ismail has been tasked to investigate the reason behind the death and why doctors and relatives of the deceased scuffled with each other.

The patient was shifted to the hospital a week ago with a head injury and died on Monday morning.

The relatives alleged that doctors were responsible for the death as they did not properly treat the patient.

The relatives and doctors scuffled with each other during which Hamza Khalil, brother of the deceased, was injured.

Later, the relatives went outside the hospital along with the body and held a protest.

Neurosurgery Department Registrar Dr Aamir Shah told Dawn that the patient was brought to the hospital in a critical condition.

“Despite that we gave artificial respiration to the patient and also told the relatives that he was in a critical condition due to the head injury. A few hours after the death of the patient a large number of relatives gathered in the hospital and started a protest and used abusive language in the presence of women. As a result, some young doctors scuffled with them,” he said.

“It is unfortunate that in almost every such incident doctors are blamed,” Dr Shah said.

Pims media coordinator Dr Waseem Khawaja said the inquiry committee would submit its report within a few days.
