Excessive rains submerge wheat crop in Swabi

SWABI: Intermittent rain over the last four days has submerged wheat crop in various regions across the district.

Growers told Dawn on Saturday that the affected regions were Khunda, Sheikh Dheri, Chota Lahor, Beka, Kaya, Kalu Khan, Saleem Khan, Maneri, Bamkhel, Baja, Maini, Gar Munara, Topi, Ismalia, Tordher, Panjpir, Charbagh and Marghuz.

They said the crop was in crucial stage, adding that more rainfall could cause extensive damage to it, thus greatly reducing the yield.

Fazal Hussain from Maneri region said crop fields had been turned into a pool of water.

Jabeen Qamar, an agriculture expert, said continuing precipitation had adversely affected the crop.

Meanwhile, a tobacco curing bhatta collapsed due to excessive rainfall in Gangudher village on Saturday. There was no body at the time of the incident, the locals said.

CLEANNESS CAMPAIGN LAUNCHED: The district administration launched on Saturday a weeklong cleanliness campaign under the Clean and Green Pakistan initiative.

A walk was held attended by officials of various public sector departments and representatives of civil society.

Deputy commissioner Shahid Mehmood, who led the walk, said the campaign covered the entire district and the people should cooperate with the officials of tehsil municipal administrations in each union council to make it a success.

BLOOD FEUD RESOLVED: A jirga has resolved a blood feud between two families of Yaqoubi village. The jirga members continued making efforts for several months and finally made the two groups to reconcile.

Awwal Sher Khan and by Gul Said, leading their respective groups, took oath on the Holy Quran that they would no longer consider each other rivals and live like brothers for rest of their lives. — Correspondent
