ISLAMABAD: Despite tall claims made by the Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) administration regarding action against adulterers, sale of substandard open milk is on the rise.

Mohammad Rizwan, a resident of H-13, said milkmen were providing poor quality milk to the residents.

He said the adulterated milk was harmful for his child’s health.

Hammad Akram of I-8/3 alleged that dairy farmers were preparing milk through detergents, refined oil and different chemicals which were hazardous to human health.

He said shopkeepers were selling their substandard milk at cheaper rates.People who buy the milk are unaware of its quality, he added.

Sara Khan, a housewife living in G-13, said milk was used for making tea several times in a day.

When contacted, ICT Food Department Deputy Director Iqbal Yousaf said crackdown had been launched against shopkeepers selling low quality milk and food items.

Shopkeepers selling substandard milk in G-9 (Karachi Company) and other areas have already been fined, he added.

Pakistan Institute of Medical Science (Pims) spokesperson Dr Wasim Khawaja said adulterated milk caused various health issues, including heart and stomach problems, cancer and in extreme cases even death.
