Shujaat camp clean sweeps Gujrat dist
GUJRAT, Aug 26: The Chaudhry Shujaat group made a clean sweep in the district, especially in Gujrat tehsil where out of total 65 seats, the group got 58 in the local elections.
The ruling PML also emerged as a major party in Mandi Bahauddin and Jhelum districts.
According to unofficial results, the Shujaat group bagged a record 92 seats in the district comprising 117 union councils while the PPP could obtain only 11, the PML-N two and the MMA one. The remaining eight successful candidates are independent.
The result of Ach UC (Kharian) is still awaited while election in Khohar and Kariala UCs (Sarai Alamgir) had been postponed.
In Gujrat tehsil, comprising 65 UCs, candidates of the Shujaat group bagged 58 seats while the PPP, under the leadership of former MNAs Chaudhry Ahmad Mukhtar and Nawabzada Ghazanfar Gul, could get only two seats. The remaining five winners, including Advocate Chaudhry Tariq Sarmad (UC-49) are independent. The two successful candidates of the PPP are Mian Pervez Akhtar Pagganwala (UC-54) and Mohammad Arif UC-32 (Barrila Sharif). This time the Chaudhris have also won their native seat (UC-53) as their candidate Raja Sikandar defeated Haji Nasir Mahmood of the PML-N. Haji Nasir was elected the first Nazim from this union council in 2001 elections.
In Kharian tehsil, comprising 43 UCs, candidates of the Shujaat group got 29 seats while the PPP, under the leadership of Kairas of Lalamusa, could get only nine. The PML-N and the MMA won one seat each while two seats were captured by independents. Results of Ach union council are still awaited due to snatching of ballot boxes. The Kairas of Lalamusa, however, again won their native seat (UC-84/1) as their candidate Advocate Nawazish Ali Sheikh defeated Asif Dhama. Their two other successful candidates in Lalamusa are Tauqeer Akram Kaira and Mehar Azam Boota. The ruling PML could take only one seat in Lalamusa in the shape of Raja Irfan Khaliq. The support of Lalamusa municipality ex-chairman Sheikh Hafizullah Siddique to candidates of the ruling PML could not change the pattern of results which is same as that of 2001 election.
Kharian Bar Association president Sajjad Akram returned from Haji Mohammad UC while Madad Ali Shah, the cousin of former MNA the late Syed Manzoor Shah won from Chokorry Sher Ghazi. A majority of the successful candidates of the ruling PML in this tehsil had affiliation with former district naib nazim Syed Noorul Hasan Shah who is now the favourite candidate for the slot of Kharian tehsil nazim.
In Sarai Alamgir tehsil which comprises nine UCs, five seats were captured by the Shujaat group while the PML-N, under the leadership of former MPA Malik Hanif Awan, could bag only one. One seat was captured by an independent candidate while election at Khohar and Kariala UCs was postponed.
In Mandi Bahauddin district, the group of MPA Riaz Asghar Warriach won 37 seats while the group of former district nazim Nazar Gondal 28 seats. Surprisingly, different opposition parties captured 15 of 27 seats in Mandi tehsil while the ruling PML obtained 12.
In Phalia tehsil (comprising 21 UCs), 15 seats were captured by the ruling PML while the remaining six seats were won by the group of the former district nazim. The Malikwal tehsil (comprising 17 seats) was also taken over by the ruling PML. Riaz Asghar group obtained 10 seats while Nazar Gondal bagged seven.
The ruling party also emerged as a major party in Jhelum which comprised 54 UCs. The group of former district nazim Farrakh Altaf won 37 seats while the group of former PML-N MNA Raja Afzal could get only 13. The group of MPA Tasneem Nasir Chaudhry could get only three while results of Bokan union council are still awaited as ballot box was taken away from a polling station in Jehangir village.
The PML also emerged winner in Jhelum tehsil which comprised 17 UCs. The ruling party obtained 11 seats while the PML-N get only five seats.
In 16 UCs of Pind Dadan Khan tehsil, 12 were captured by the ruling PML while the remaining four seats were bagged by the PML-N.
In Sohawa tehsil (comprising 10 UCs), the ruling PML got five seats, MPA Tasneem Nasir group three while the PML-N two. In Dina (comprising 11 UCs), nine seats were captured by the ruling party while the PML-N could get only two.
Meanwhile, the Jhelum police registered a against several men, including former MNA Raja Afzal and MNA Raja Asad, on the charge of killing guard Liaquat of MPA Tasneem Nasir.
