BOOKS IN BRIEF

Indus: Script in Stones

Aziz Kingrani

An exploration of the ancient rock art found in the Kirthar Mountains of Sindh and Balochistan, comprising pictures as well as inscriptions which, in the author’s view, are related to the Indus, Sanskrit, Brahmi and Kharosthi scripts. The significance of the author’s field research is that this is, purportedly, the first time the Indus script has been discovered outside Mohenjo Daro.

The Parliament of Pakistan: A History of Institution Building and (Un)Democratic Practices, 1971-1977

Mahboob Hussain

An examination of the role, function and evolution of Pakistan’s parliament during what was primarily Zulfikar Ali Bhutto’s tenure as prime minister. With a focus on autonomy, complexity and sovereignty, it provides insight into the strengths and weaknesses of parliaments in postcolonial states.
