Virus claims another life in Gilgit-Baltistan

GILGIT: The Gilgit-Baltistan government on Thursday announced that the novel coronavirus had killed a resident and affected two more taking the region’s confirmed cases tally to 92.

It also said eight residents had recovered from the virus.

Information minister Shams Mir told a news conference here that the death toll from the virus in GB had reached three after the death of an elderly confirmed case from Astore district.

He said the eight confirmed coronavirus cases tested negative for the virus in the day.

The minister said the recovered patients would be discharged from hospitals on Friday.

He said two of those patients belonged to Nagar and Gilgit districts each.

Mr Mir said the recovery of five confirmed coronavirus patients had taken the tally of such cases in the region to 13.

He said the lockdown enforced by the government to contain coronavirus had brought about good results in the region.

The minister said the distribution of ration to the needy people in the region would begin on April 5.

Meanwhile, the Gilgit-Baltistan government extended the closure of all public and private schools and colleges, universities and their sub-campuses, seminaries, and coaching and tuition centres across the region until May 1.
