Chief Justice calls details of rape incident

ISLAMABAD, Aug 31: Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry on Wednesday directed the Punjab chief secretary and Inspector-General Police to submit within 10 days a comprehensive report on the reported rape of a housewife by a police officer of tehsil Jaranwala.

“The chief secretary and the Inspector-General of Police (Punjab) are directed to send a comprehensive report of the incident within 10 days without fail,” the order said.

A one-page order has been issued by the Supreme Court on an application of a local lawyer Zulfikar Ahmed Bhutta seeking suo motu cognizance of excesses against the woman.

Sonia Naz was arrested from the National Assembly in April last where she had gone to seek help of public representatives for her missing husband. She was sent to the Adiyala jail from where she was released on bail but was allegedly abducted by the Faisalabad police.

She alleged that she was kept in illegal confinement for a fortnight during which she was raped and tortured by Jaranwala SHO Jamshed Chishti on directives and in presence of Abdullah Khalid, SP Investigations.

Both police officers have been suspended on the directives of Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz.
