Tennis: Indians set for clean sweep

ISLAMABAD, Sep 1: Indian top seed Sumit Prakash Gupta and his compatriot Kinshuk Sharma qualified for the boys singles final of the ITF Junior tennis Championship at the Islamabad Club on Thursday.

Both players recorded comfortable semifinals victories with Gupta knocking out country-fellow Aswin Vijayaragayan 6-0, 6-2 and Sharma defeating Anshuman Ditta, another Indian 7-6 (3), 6-0.

The girls doubles title was claimed by Inayat Khosla of India and Malaysian Jawairiah Noordin who downed Indians Karina Ahuja and Tejaswini Datla 6-2, 6-2 without much difficulty.

The girls singles semifinals saw 3rd seed Jawairiah upset second seed Tejaswini Datla of India 6-3, 6-1 while Karina beat Thailand’s Satjaporn Mahajaroenkul 6-4, 6-4.

In the boys doubles semifinals the Indian pair of Sumit Prakash Gupta and Anshuman thrashed Pukit Mishra and Rubl Shandilya 6-3, 6-4.

In the final, the duo will take on the team of Khunpol Issara of Thailand and Indian Kinshuk Sharma, 6-2, 6-2 winners against Vijayaragayan and Siddharth Hande.

The final of the boys singles is scheduled to be played on Friday at 9.30 am with the girls decider at 3.15pm simualtaneously with the boys doubles final.

The first leg of the tournament that is now drawing to a close has been dominated by Indians that has left the Pakistan Tennis Federation’s hopes in tatters.

Girls doubles final: Inayat Khosla (Ind)-Jawairiah Noordin (Mas) bt Karina Ahuja-Tejaswini Datla (Ind) 6-2, 6-2.
