Website review: The planetary tour

We have been reading a lot about environment, health, fun and entertainment lately, and so it’s been a while since we read something about our universe or the solar system. But we don’t have to go through lengthy and boring texts; let’s explore something we haven’t read or known before or may be reinforce what we already know of at The Nine Planets — a site with an overview of the history, mythology, and current scientific knowledge of the planets, moons and other objects in our solar system.

Don’t get confused with the site name, “The Nine Planets”, we all know that there are eight planets because Pluto comes under the category of a dwarf planet and the site also mentions it clearly while explaining the planets.

Like most sites, the main menu is at the top with categories Planets, Solar System, Objects, Asteroid Types, Stars, Questions and Planets for Kids with all having drop down menus for instance, you can explore terrestrial planets, gas giants, and dwarf planets in the “Planet” section while C-type Asteroids, M-type asteroids, Near earth Asteroids, Icarus and Kirkwood Gap in “Asteroid Types”.

If you want to know more about the planets and universe you can open the “Questions” category and read some very interesting questions and short answers with pictures and videos if necessary. While the next section on the menu, “Planets for kids” is designed for very small children who need more pictures and more facts.

As for the colours and theme, the site is quite simple with cool and soothing colour scheme of blue, grey and white; there are no ads or unnecessary material. According to The Nine Planets’ site, it has been online since 1994 and was one of the first multimedia websites that appeared on the World Wide Web. All the pictures and content on the site is mostly provided by Nasa.

Thus, if you are bored with the routine reading and studies take an interactive tour of the solar system, or browse the site to find fascinating information, facts, and data about our planets, the solar system, and beyond.
