Covid-19 kills more men than women in KP: report

PESHAWAR: More men have died of Covid-19 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa than women since the advent of the pandemic, according to a new report.

Bajaur and Swabi districts recorded the highest case fatality in the province. The virus infected more than 2,000 health workers of whom 18 died. The recovery rate from the ailment remained about 70 per cent.

The report of World Health Organisation said that coronavirus killed 1,099 persons in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa including 798 men and 289 women. It added that number of total infected persons in the province was 30,512 including 218,991 men and 8,621 women.

It said that among the dead persons from Covid-19, 63 per cent were men and 27 per cent were women. It said that the infected people accounted for 72 per cent male and 28 per cent female.

18 of the 2,000 infected health workers die

The age-wise categorisation of the dead persons due to coronavirus showed that six (one per cent) were from 10 to 20 years; 22 (two per cent) were from 21 to 30 years; 69 (six per cent) were from 31 to 40 years; 187 (17 per cent) were from 41 to 50 years; 346 (31 per cent) were from 51 to 60 years; 324 (29 per cent) were from 61 to 70 years; 114 (10 per cent) were from 71 to 80 years; 29 ( three per cent) were from 81 to 90 years; and two aged from 91 to 100 years.

Both Bajaur and Swabi districts have the highest case fatality rate (CFR) of six per cent in the province, followed by Battagram, Nowshera, Kohat, Mardan, Abbottabad, Hangu and Peshawar with five per cent, Karak, Mansehra, Dera Ismail Khan and Bannu with four per cent and Buner, Malakand, Swat and Lower Dir with three per cent and Dir Upper, Charsadda, Haripur, Orakzai and Mohmand with two per cent while Shangla, Lakki Marwat, Kurram and Khyber recorded one per cent FCR.

Peshawar recorded 10,957 cases and 522 deaths; Swat recorded 2,692 cases and 94 deaths; Abbottabad 1,249 cases and 63 deaths; Mardan 1,174cases and55 deaths, Nowshera 863 cases and 46 deaths; Bajaur 534 cases and 32 deaths; Swabi 437 cases and 26 deaths; Dera Ismail Khan 399 cases and 16 deaths; Mansehra, Karak and Battagram each recorded 15 deaths and 863, 416 and 410 cases respectively; Charsadda recorded 803 cases and 14 deaths; Buner 419 cases and 11 deaths; Haripur and Khyber recorded 10 deaths each and 564 and 741 cases respectively; Hangu 160 cases and eight deaths; and Bannu recorded 159 cases and seven deaths.

The pandemic also infected 2,026 health workers including 937 (46 per cent) doctors, 770 (38 per cent) paramedics and other staff and 319 (15 per cent) nurses. Of the infected staffers, 1,623 have recovered from the infection.

The report said that 18 (one per cent) of the infected health workers died in the province due to Covid-19. They included nine doctors, five paramedics and one each nurse, medical technician and two Class-IV employees.

Among the infected health workers, 1491 (73 per cent) were male and 553 (27 per cent) were female.

The province has so far reported 30,486 cases with 1,099 deaths since the onset of the pandemic. The overall CFR in the province was 3.60 per cent, said the report.

It said that currently, 517 confirmed patients were being treated in different hospitals of the province. Among the admitted patients, 346 were in critical position but only 57 were on ventilators, it added.

A total of 20,762 persons (69.40 per cent) have recovered from the ailment and discharged from the hospitals. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has allocated 5,440 beds for Covid-19 patients in different hospitals.
