Large amount of cash recovered from hawala operator’s home

KARACHI: The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) Corporate Crime Circle, Karachi, conducted a raid on the residence of hawala (illegal money transfer) operator Mohammad Naqash in Gulzar-i-Hijri and recovered a huge amount of cash, officials said on Wednesday.

The suspect managed to escape.

Acting on a tip-off, an FIA team raided the house and recovered Rs2,072,500, Chinese Yuan 7,000, Saudi Riyal 7,121, US Dollar 470, UAE Dirham 400 and a laptop, mobile phone containing hawala messages, a cash-counting machine and two chequebooks, said FIA Karachi director Munir Ahmed Shaikh.

In addition to it, some text messages from the mobile had been identified. These included bank transaction message from Saudi Arabia to Hong Kong of US $25,000 and dozens of text messages pertaining to receiving of cash from various persons.

The senior officer pointed out that on the day of the raid they received messages of Rs19 million and of Rs22m a day earlier. Further investigation was under way.

Woman shot dead, husband hurt

A woman was shot dead while her husband wounded in Gulshan-i-Maymar early on Wednesday morning, said police and rescue officials.

They added that unidentified suspects entered a home in Abdul Rehman Goth off Superhighway and gunned down Asiya, 40, and wounded her husband, Imran, 40.

The area police officer said it was the second marriage of the wounded man from whom he had a minor daughter.

He also had six daughters from his first wife who lived with him in the same home.

The woman had disappeared along with her daughters after the incident.

The police suspected that the incident might be linked with the second marriage.

The body was taken to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital.

The injured man, who suffered bullet wound in his leg and stab injuries on his face, was also admitted for treatment.
