14 killed in rain-related incidents across Punjab

FAISALABAD: Eleven people, including five children, were killed and 14 others injured when the roofs of four houses caved in due to rain on Monday night.

In Tandlianwala’s Dhup Sari village, eight members of a family were killed when the roofs and outer wall of three rooms of their house caved in, trapping the people under the rubble.

Among the deceased were a woman, her three daughters and a son. The deceased were identified as Fatima, 3; Farzana, 13; Jannat Bibi, 16; Bushra, 18; Mehdi Hassan, 14; Yasir, 13; and Khurram, 10. Kaneez and Fatima were injured and shifted to the DHQ Hospital in a serious condition, Rescue 1122 personnel said.

In Vaddian Kanggan in Abbaspur, three people were killed and four injured when a building collapsed due to heavy rain. Saira Waryam, 17; Naseem Waryam, 9; and Rizwan Waryam, 13, were among the deceased. Mariya Waryam, 18; Malhal Waryam, 8; Nasreen, 42; and Muhammad Hussain, 45 were injured and provided first aid by the rescuers.

Separately, six people were injured when the roof of their house collapsed in Chak 210, Lakhuana.

The injured were identified as Sobia Irfan, 27; Zohaib Irfan, 3; Shehnaz, 43; Areeb Mumtaz, 12; Fateh Bibi, 70; and Bashiraan Bibi, 70. They were administered first aid, while three of them were shifted to the Khurrianwala Rural Health Centre.

Two sisters sustained injuries when the roof of a house caved in near Rehmy Shah Road, Tandlianwala. They were identified as Sana Abdullah, 15, and Samreen Abdullah, 18.

Both were shifted to Tandlianwala THQ Hospital and their condition was said to be stable.

VEHARI: Two persons were electrocuted to death and six injured in rain-related incidents here on Tuesday.

Heavy rain started on Monday night and the adjoining areas and continued till Tuesday noon.

Traders Rao Tayyab and Malik Sajid suffered electric shocks near the grain market while crossing the road near a pole and died on the spot.

Moreover, six people were injured in the city, including Sarwar, Ali, Ghulam Rasool, Khalid and Hafeez. Also, rainwater entered houses in People’s Colony and 9-11/WB. Municipal committee staff were unable to drain the rainwater that had inundated roads till the filing of this report.

Electricity supply to most of the areas was suspended for over eight hours, while more rain was expected in the next 24 hours. Various mud houses also collapsed in nearby villages.

BAHAWALPUR: One person was killed when the boundary wall of a factory collapsed due to rain in Ahmedpur East, about 40km from here.

According to Rescue 1122 sources, Muhammad Rafique was standing near the dilapidated wall of the factory. Due to torrential rain and strong winds, the wall collapsed and Rafique was buried under the rubble.

His body was recovered by the rescue team.

LODHRAN: Six people were injured when a room collapsed due to rains.

According to Rescue 1122, the room collapsed in Chak 53-M Gelewal as a result of which six people were injured and shifted to the rural health centre.

They were identified as Muhammad Ali, his son Idrees, Anam Bibi, Khalida Bibi, Aqsa Bibi and Basheer.
