Junejo appointed Irsa member from Sindh

ISLAMABAD: The federal government on Wednesday appointed Zahid Hussain Junejo as member of the Indus River System Authority (Irsa) to represent Sindh in determination and distribution of water share among the provinces.

In a notification issued by the ministry of water resources, Mr Junejo would act as Irsa member for three years.

The post had fallen vacant on August 24 on completion of three-year term of Syed Mazhar Ali Shah.

The ministry of water resources had moved a summary to the prime minister for appointment of Mr Junejo as Irsa member on the basis of a three-member panel proposed by the Sindh government. The panel included Zahid Hussain Junejo, Khalid Haider Memon and then incumbent Syed Mazhar Ali Shah in that order.

Mr Junejo is retired Chief Engineer (BS-20) of the Sindh irrigation department.

Under the Irsa Act of 1992, the regulator should comprise five members, one each to be nominated by the provinces and one by the federal government. Starting with Balochistan, the provincial members also perform the functions of Irsa chairman in the order of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, Sindh and the federal government for one year.
