LHC seeks notification of UAF VC’s appointment

LAHORE: The Lahore High Court on Friday directed the Punjab government to submit a notification on Oct 20 about the appointment of Dr Iqrar Ahmad as vice chancellor (VC) of the University of Agriculture Faisalabad (UAF).

Earlier, a law officer presented the original copy of the summary sent by the chief minister to the chancellor/governor for the appointment of the VC in light of a court judgement. The officer also assured the court that a notification to this effect shall be issued within a day.

Dr Ahmad had filed a petition seeking contempt proceedings against Chief Minister Usman Buzdar and others for defying a judgement that envisaged his appointment as the VC.

On a previous hearing, the court had warned the chief minister and other government functionaries of serious consequences for purposely delaying implementation of the judgement about appointment of the petitioner as the VC.

BUILDINGS: The court issued notices to the Punjab chief secretary, Lahore Development Authority and the Metropolitan Corporation of Lahore on a petition seeking implementation of a Supreme Court judgment regarding high-rise buildings.

Adnan Khalid, the petitioner, pleaded through his counsel Chaudhry Abdul Sattar that the apex court in its order on July 19, 2006 had directed the provincial government to “immediately consider initiation of steps for making laws regarding multiple ownership, protection of interests of the owners and occupants of high-rise buildings.

He said the court had also ordered for providing an insurance cover to the owners and steps for maintenance of common facilities in the multi-storey buildings. The counsel asked the court to order the government to implement the SC judgement without further delay to immediately make laws regarding multiple ownerships in high-rise buildings.

Justice Ayesha A. Malik heard the arguments and sought replies from the respondents within two weeks.
