Website review: Playing with geometry

These days, most academic work is done on the computer, whether Urdu, science, maths, algebra or geometry. Oftentimes in geometry, constructing simple tasks of angles and lines become difficult on the screen, but www.sketchometry.com makes it easy for you to play with complex angles and lines even on the screen.

Sketchometry is an interactive construction and exploration tool for Euclidean geometry. It allows you to construct geometric objects and define their dependencies by simply drawing sketches of lines, circles and points on the screen (no matter how rough you make). The website, with its novel mixture of algorithms, then interprets your input and converts it into exact geometrical objects.

For instance, you can draw a rough circle or a triangle with your finger or mouse and the website will turn it into a real circle or a triangle automatically. Moreover, you will find an indicator near the top of the screen which tells you what you’ll get if you let go at that point in time.

The interface is very simple, the designers have gone for a minimalist icon-based approach; with no clutter and no ads. Once you hit the button, ‘Start sketchometry’, a new page, that is the grid page, opens with all the main icons to start with the construction on the top. Press plus ‘+’ to get started. If you are new to doing geometry on the desktop, then you must go to the ‘Help’ section first and learn how to play around with geometrical constructions.

For those of you using tablets, the ‘Help’ page is of ‘real help’ as it shows you the gestures that can be used on a tablet to achieve various mathematical constructs, like triangles, perpendiculars, and ‘gliders’ (where a point glides on a line or curve). These constructions can be explored in a very natural way by dragging, rotating and manipulating the geometric objects. You can save these constructions locally on your device or in the cloud. The ‘Help’ section also has some example videos that tell you more about using other features and tools on the website.

So what are you waiting for, get ready and play around in an amazing geometry playground at www.sketchometry.com
