Narowal police clueless about Rs6.5m heist
NAROWAL, Sept 29: The Narowal police have failed to trace the culprits involved in the Rs6.5 million theft even after two months of the incident, jeweller Haji Muhammad Bashir told journalists on Thursday.
Some thieves had taken away Rs1.5 million (including foreign currency) in cash and gold ornaments worth Rs5 million from Haji Bashir’s shop at Husaini Chowk on Aug 6.
The jeweller said the city police took many youths, including all the employees of the shop, into custody and tortured them but later absolved them of the crime after receiving bribe.
Now, he said, the police were suspecting that his (jeweller’s) son might be involved in the crime. His son Ejaz alias Jajji, however, pointed fingers at one of their relatives, Muhammad Idrees, whom the police tortured in custody but later set free after receiving illegal gratification.
Denying the charges against the policemen, DPO Muhammad Usman Khattak said he had constituted a high-level team, headed by DSP (investigation) Zulfiqar Ali Cheema, for investigating the case.
