NAB approves filing of final reference against Khursheed Shah

SUKKUR: National Accoun­tability Bureau, Sukkur region, has given approval for filing final reference against MNA Khursheed Ahmed Shah, senior leader of Pakistan Peoples Party, in a case of accumulation of assets beyond known sources of income being heard by accountability court.

A notification issued by the NAB Sukkur on Thursday said that the bureau’s regional meeting presided over by director general Mirza Irfan Baig endorsed the final reference and sent it to NAB chairman for final approval. It would be filed in the accountability court Sukkur after the chairman gave a go-ahead, said the handout.

The accountability court had already allowed NAB to submit the final reference against Khursheed Shah.

Sources in NAB said that the final reference contained details of more and hitherto undiscovered assets and several new na­­mes of “frontmen” of Khursheed Shah.

The meeting also approved application of a contractor, Tariq Abbasi, for plea bargain according to which Abbasi had deposited Rs6,424,627 in national exchequer.

The contractor was accused of committing large-scale corruption in development works of irrigation department. The meeting also considered 17 applications NAB had received.

Municipal commissioner, TMO awarded jail terms

Sukkur accountability court on Thursday sentenced former municipal commissioner of Sukkur Tufail Soomro to 10 years imprisonment and imposed on him fine of Rs15 million, and awarded eight years jail term to former taluka municipal officer Waqar Soomro with fine of Rs10m.

Judge Fareed Anwar Qazi announced the verdict in a NAB reference about fake recruitments after he found both officers guilty of the charge. Both the officers were arrested on the court premises after the verdict and sent to jail.

They were charged with making bogus recruitments in grade-1 to 15 in the Sukkur Municipal Corporation between 2009 and 2012. Tufail Soomro had recruited 276 people and Waqar Soomro had made 72 fake recruitments. The officials had obtained bail from Sindh High Court.
