Three policemen suspended over custodial death in Lahore

LAHORE: The police authorities on Saturday suspended from service the Wagah police checkpoint in charge and two constables following death of a suspect, allegedly because of torture in custody.

The action was taken against the police officials following an inquiry in which they were found guilty of the charges.

According to the initial reports, the policemen had ‘arrested’ 40-year-old Rizwan in a drug case and allegedly tortured him during interrogation.

The suspect later died in a local hospital where he had been shifted by police in a critical condition.

Taking notice of the incident, the Punjab inspector general of police had sought a report from Lahore police.

A spokesperson for the Lahore police said after suspending the three policemen from service, the capital city police officer (CCPO) has deputed Manawan Circle deputy superintendent of police (DSP) for a regular inquiry into the incident.
