Tareen’s sugar mill challenges selection for audit

LAHORE: The JDW Sugar Mills of Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf’s senior leader Jahangir Khan Tareen has approached the Lahore High Court challenging its selection for audit by the Inland Revenue department of the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR).

The mills’ counsel submits in a petition that the FBR launched an audit of the five-year old accounts of the company in light of the report of a sugar inquiry commission. He argues that the board, under the law, cannot hold audit of accounts beyond five years.

He says the Inland Revenue department rejected the objections filed by the petitioner against the notices for the audit without affording an opportunity of personal hearing. He asks the court to set aside the impugned process of the audit and the notices issued to the petitioner/mills for being unlawful.

Justice Shahid Waheed took up the petition on Wednesday, however, referred back to the chief justice for its fixation before Justice Jawad Hassan.
