HYDERABAD: Paying homage to Sindh United Party (SUP) leader Dr Anwar Leghari on his fifth death anniversary, leaders and activists of various Sindhi nationalist groups said he always tried to serve humanity and struggled for the cause of the province.

Dr Leghari had served people across Sindh as he was a true nationalist worker, said SUP president Syed Jalal Mehmood Shah while addressing the event organised by the SUP on Friday at the local press club.

He said he always made SUP leaders work as he was himself a hard worker. Shah said Dr Leghari served the ailing humanity and opened clinics in far-flung areas to provide free-of-cost treatment to the poor.

He always coordinated with people living in the rural parts of Sindh and loved to serve people.

It was said that the middle class was living in Qasimabad, but why they did not exercise their right of franchise in a correct manner, Shah asked. He said he did not understand why the nationalists failed to get enough votes from Qasimabad in elections.

The SUP head said Dr Leghari struggled to get a middle class friend elected from Qasimabad and was killed during the local bodies election campaign.

Jeay Sindh Qaumi Mahaz (Arisar) leader Ameer Azad Panhwar said that Anwar Leghari always thought for Sindh and he also tried to bring all nationalists on one table. He was a sensitive man and always helped the poor, he added.

Awami Tehreek leader Noor Ahmed Katiyar said Dr Leghari was an active member of Sindh’s nationalist caravan. He said that although he was affiliated with the SUP, he always stayed in touch with other nationalist parties.

He said he always emphasised for fighting elections jointly. He said Dr Leghari always aspired for reforming society. He was killed while struggling against the corrupt system, he added.

Some resolutions were also adopted on the occasion, demanding punishment for the killers of Anwar Leghari, recovery of missing persons of Sindh and an end to the control of the federal government over islands in Sindh and Balochistan. It also demanded withdrawal of the presidential ordinance regarding the Pakistan Islands Development Authority.

Mohib Azad Leghari, Latif Leghari and others said Dr Leghari had become immortal. He had given a message for awakening in Sindh, they added.
