Climber goes missing in GB

GILGIT: An American climber on a mission to conquer the Broad Peak has gone missing in Gilgit-Baltistan, a tour organiser said on Sunday.

Alex Goldfarb, a Russian-American, and Zoltan Szlanko, from Hungary, had arrived at Pastore Peak, which is not far from the 8,047-high Broad Peak, for acclimatisation. The two mountaineers plan to attempt an ascent of the Broad Peak in winter, considered a dangerous feat by climbers.

On Sunday, tour organiser Asghar Ali Porik informed local officials that Mr Szlanko had returned, but Mr Goldfarb had not been seen since Saturday.

A team was despatched to look for the mountaineer, but was unable to trace him.

John Snorri of Iceland, who is currently at K2 base camp before attempting to ascent the world’s second-highest peak with Muhammad Ali Sadpara, also took part in the search.
